We purchased the DeeZee Bed Mat to help protect the bed of our truck even though we have a cover. The mat fit very well. It is a thick rubber and helps keep items from sliding around (i.e., groceries).
The ride on the long bed is nice! If you need the additional bed size for hauling and your wife and son only want the short bed for looks, I'd say get the long bed for sure.
